This is a very useful tool when using overlays. It's available on at least Vegas 4-6. This is where you fade from 100% to some other opacity, or between two different opacities. Many thanks to jagwriter78 for figuring this out and explaining it to me.
1. Load and select the clip you want to fade.

2. Select "Insert-Video Envelopes- Track Composite Level". This will show you a blue line at the top of the clip and when you place the cursor over the line, it will turn into a hand.

3. Place the cursor where you want the final opacity. In this case, it will be around 50%. Right click on the blue line and you will see a drop down menu. On this menu you will want to "Add point". As you can see, the default fade option is "Smooth Fade" You can change this if you desire.

4. Now that you have added a point, you can click and drag it to the desired opacity. This opacity will remain for the rest of the timeline unless you add more points to change it. If you want the opacity to jump back to 100% at the end of the clip, you will need to add two consecutive points (do this by zooming in on the timeline to ensure they are on consecutive frames). Then move the second point to 100% as shown above. |
