This is how to do a Picture in a Picture like you would see on the
evening news.
This is an easy one to accomplish. The first thing to do
is to place the two clips you want to use on two different track. The
one you wish to be the Picture in a Picture should be in the track
closer to the top. Use the "Event pan/crop" tool to resize the upper
clip. I prefer to set the zoom view to 25% so that you can easily
reposition the clip once you have resized it. Directions are shown in
the image below.
Your
finished product will look like the preview box in the above image. At
this point you are ready to save the project and render it.
Another
way to do PIP is to use the "Cookie Cutter" feature. This will allow
you to have different shapes, such as circle and diamond and fading
around the edges rather than just the TV news style PIP. In this case,
the larger picture would be the upper layer, with the PIP as the lower
layer.

The
above is the cookie cutter window, which will pop up when you select
the "Cookie Cutter" out of the "Video FX" tab. In this case I chose a
feathered circle. It defaults to the center of the screen, but using
either the circled locator tool or the "Center X/Center Y" coordinates,
you can change the location. The preview screen shows you where teh cut
area will be. This is where your PIP underlayer would show through.
By adjusting the location of the underlayer, I was able to have Crais show up in the cut out area.
