Doctor Who - Season 3
3.08 Human Nature
This review was written by Teska Future
I believe that Paul Cornell is simply magnificent. First, Father's Day, and now this. And my shippy heart is thrilled and I would actually have been behind the sofa if that was possible, so...I love this ep! And now, my review...
If you have ever read one of my reviews in the past, you know that I will looking for Doctor/Rose ship, even if it is not really there. At this point, I just prayed for a Rose mention. I got even better than that. *grin* But let's start back at the beginning, shall we?
Opening: Run, run for your life!! What a way to open the episode! Again, Paul Cornell, you rock! 'Did they see you?' 'I don't know!' The jolt straight in made me question whether I missed something...and then snapped right into bed with Ten!
Not quite him: You can tell right off the bat that it's not him. The confusion in his eyes. (Absolutely wonderful job, DT!)
Dreams: I was holding my breath, waiting for the explanation of how the Doctor sees himself from a human perspective. I dream that I'm this...adventurer. This daredevil. A madman. The Doctor, I'm called. How apt a description!
Enter John Smith, Professor: They really wore hats like that? I feel like it ought to be going to graduation. *hehe*
Maid Martha and her Sidekick: I like her. Which, of course, does not bode well for her. I'm also impressed that they kept with the historical accuracy with the race issue, and how Martha is handling it. At this point in the story, I like her as well. *grin*
Bumbling adorkable Mr. Smith: He runs into Joan and can that man get any more adorable then he already is? Completely adorable as it is obvious that his mind goes completely and utterly blank when around a girl.
TWO MONTHS! Oh my, now I feel bad for Martha. They've been there for two months while the Doctor gets to play human and she gets to clean floors?
Falling Down the Stairs and Being Fixed Up: Again, I feel bad for Martha. This has got to be a miserable two months, especially since she still hasn't 'learned her place' as she keeps getting told. I loved the saucy retort of going back and knocking on the door.
A Journal of Impossible Things: Oh, I have a lot to say on this scene, thanks to my pausing and attempting to read as much as I can. *grin* First of all...
Rose's Theme: Um, can I say...ouch! You hear a hint of it when she confirms that he has only one heart.
Page 1 and 2: The TARDIS: Good ol' ship. *grin* There is a big center on some kind of ship. It has wires all around it, bright lights. Wires connect the light pieces with the whole room. I feel safe there. It seems to be some sort of control console. Oh, he feels safe there. How sweet! *sniff sniff* Alright, ditch the Smith, go back to the Doctor. *hehe* Much harder to read page 2, only get bits and pieces like: bigger inside than outside control, it has controls on the light source, levers and socket wires that connect it to the room, There is also some notes and that I do not understand.
Page 3: Sonic Screwdriver: I love this description. I have this original, almost pen like instrument that opens anything. It lights up even - bright white light when I use it....I think it uses...called sonic although I'm sure the name was a lot longer, I just cannot remember.
Page 4: Gallifrey symbols. symbols, it says, Union...Why? Why?
Ripped Out Pages: Why did he rip out two pages? Oh, I so want to know! Who can get a hold on this journal? What is on pages 5, 6, 7, and 8?
Page 9: Gas Mask Zombies: Oh, very creepy even to see them again on paper. It's very difficult to read since the ripped out pages takes away from the corners. He pretty much says gas masks a lot. In circles for each word it says: People...Mask...Gas...Old...Young.
Page 10-11: Daleks: They just don't want me to be able to read these, eh? And what is with Smith drawing pictures over his writing? How are we to tell what he said when he's writing like that? I can make out......everything. it stood only for itself, for the side it was on. The other side had nothing on. It looked like it was alive, although it was a machine. I am not sure on the colour. I think it was dark...or black. Near the picture of the sucker, it said: it was like some sort of weapon. , There was some kind of metal, thick...it was definitely metal.
Page 13: Baldoon: Can't see page 12 at all, so 13 will have to do. This is all in little phrases around the picture. Blue monster with a big head, he sat on his throne. , ...it was above, above the world, and watched it above the Earth. , There were a lot of monsters in this dream, more than usual, different and...
Page 15: Autons: This was about the Plastic Men. ...other they are amongst ourselves in those clothes too, only they are falling now, falling in....down with gunfire. , I think their faces were plastic. They had eyes that were empty.
Page 16-17: Clockwork Men: Oh, the Doctor comes through on these pages. Beautiful monsters. Clockwork! They have clocks for faces. And had left something behind, had left someone behind again, and I can never get her back. Here set something on fire, and its away up the chimney and I'll never see it again. , broken glass , Masks? Cover faces. Beautiful. Elegant , white, always smiling, always grinning, empty eyes, black eyes , beautiful monsters, always smiling , permanent smiling.
Page 18-19: Rose: the pretty girl: Oh, how telling these pages are. In my dreams, I know her well, I know I know her. She is my... Blimey, Smith, have to draw over that important word, don't ya!! In my dreams, I keep ...ing. A girl...to...and she is dressed in the most immodest way. She will not answer me, and she keeps walking away. , In my dreams, she keeps walking away. See her in my dreams. The other page is extremely hard to read. All I can see is Rose perfect , perfect , for Rose , perfect Rose , perfect Rose, perfect Rose, dreams.
Rose Mention of the Week: Um...SQUEE!!! After reading what is in his journal, I should die of shipper delight. *grin* Her mention is as follows:
Joan: Quite an eye for the pretty girl.
Smith: Oh, no, no, she's, uh, just an invention, this character Rose, I call her, Rose, She seems to disappear later on.
*sigh*
Page 21: Cybermen: You didn't think we were done, did you? Okay, I did after doing all that, but nope, not yet. So, here's some more! helmets are with faces metal , metal men, metal men, metal men, march, march, march, evil men, marching metal , men in metal suits, metal men. I think I got the picture with the, uh, picture. *hehe* But thanks for the explanation, Smith. *grin*
Page 23: The TARDIS, exterior: Oh, the TARDIS. I love it. So does he. *grin* About: It's my home, I know it well, but it is huge, bigger on the inside than the outside. Maisu Latras Oua Extra (um, I may not have translated that correctly as I'm guess it's Latin? Continuing on) It's my magic box. Nothing can harm me there. Unless I get lost inside it. And there is something to do with the..., with the police, although when I am inside it, I do not think of myself as representing the authorities. It feels almost as a figurative. It looks like a...(hand is covering the page, I'm thinking blue)...box with...windows...inside. , magic box repeated at least 3 times. *grin* How cute is that? Nothing can harm me there...unless I get lost inside it. *hehe*
Page 25: The Doctors: This is crossed out so much that it's difficult to see any of the writing. Mostly just the pictures. Some of the words I can make out are: changing faces. I have changed so many... , all my different faces , I am different. Different faces, I have been different....have changed now...changed about...don't know how or... changing faces appears quite a few more times as well. Arrows point between all the different drawings.
Page 26: Not quite sure what this is about, maybe now about the watch. Phrases like: I am the last for some reason. I am terribly afraid that my watch is broken. , I can't remember... , Who?
Page 27: Pocket Watch: Definitely about the watch now. watch or pocket watch , pocket watch, it is significant. pocket watch is significant, significant watch , there is weird markings on the... Okay...journal time is over. I've got over 30 minutes still left to recap! *hehe*
Joan Annoying: Is this on purpose? She keeps telling Martha to know her place and to stop being familiar with Smith. Is it really her place to tell Martha to know her place? Are they purposely trying to make me not like Joan? I want to like her. She's done nothing to me, but, I don't care what the attitude of the day is...she's beginning to get on my nerves. Smith's crush on her is the only thing keeping me from completely disliking her.
Enter Tim Latimer: Why do I know this kid? He looks so familiar. I looked him up on IMDB, but the only thing I can recognize is Love Actually, though I don't remember watching that film. Must have, 'cause I definitely recognize this kid. Or maybe I've just seen him on the Nanny McPhee commercials. In any case, he's a cute young one and definitely looks younger than his then 16 years.
Tim is Special: Tim seems to know things. Things that were, things that are, and things that could be. Know anyone else with abilities like that? *grin*
Martha Eager to Leave: One more month and she is as free as the wind. Do they plan on telling us why there was a 3 month window? I know that in the book, the Doctor was going to do this for three month, but this has been played around with now. Don't you know, Martha? Or have you just not given us our flashback yet? *grin*
First Signs of Trouble: Good for you keeping an eye out for trouble there, Martha! You may be a good companion yet! However, Joan has been scanned, and left. Really? Did they do something to her? Something we might not know about until next episode?
Smith is a Gentleman: I miss the Doctor, but at least this Smith fella is a gentlemen, willing to escort all the young ladies home. However, this will not do. Since his brain has gone swanning off into a watch, Martha has to be extra careful. It's all up to her.
Banes: The Stupid Boy: If you find an invisible spaceship landed in a nearby field and find a door, don't go in it! Never a good idea!! You have no idea what might be in there. And more likely than not, they are not very nice if they are hiding from you. You deserve what you get, I'm afraid.
Tim Recognizes Trouble: Tim has a good eye to spot trouble, right off. Who else can sense trouble right away? *grin*
Visit to the TARDIS: Ah, what lovely music to lead you back to the TARDIS. I'd like to stay in there and hide for the last month instead of cleaning floors. You're talking to a machine, Martha? She's alive! That old girl will take care of you if you are nice to her.
Stop Being a Time Lord: You have got to love that if he has to stop being a Time Lord, his first choice is human. *grin* He loves us. Uses the comillian arch to rewrite every single cell in his body. Well, that makes sense. His physiology is written to change that sort of thing. But, I bet it's gonna hurt like a regeneration. Yep, I'm right.
Instructions: When did he have time to leave her instructions for this? It looked like he got into the ship and then rewrote his DNA. When did he leave time for 23 points for her to follow? And where was she while he was recording this? Ahh! Well, I'm not going to let a little thing like that drown my love for this ep away.
1: Don't let me hurt anyone. We can't have that, but you know what humans are like.
2: Don't worry about the TARDIS. I'll put it on emergency power so they can't detect it. Just let it hide away.
4, no, wait a minute 3: No getting involved in big historical events.
4: You. Don't let me abandon you.
Wait, don't skip the instructions, Martha! I want to know these!! He certainly was talking alot during it...
23: If anything goes wrong, if they find us, Martha, then you know what to do. Open the watch. Everything I am is kept safe in there. Now, I'll put a perception filter on it so that the human me will not thinking anything of it. To him, it's just a watch. But don't open it unless you have to. Because once it's open, then the Family will be able to find me. It's all down to you, Martha. Your choice.
Oh, and, thank you. *grin* That cheeky grin just perfect to end it.
Tim is Exceptionally Smart: He seems to be hiding his geniusness. Who else is extremely clever? *hehe* And very perceptive... the watch was speaking to him. It tells him: Time Lord. and Eternity and the Doctor saying: The secret lies within. I'm trapped, I'm caged inside the clock. In the dark waiting, always waiting. Makes it very tempting to open that little watch, eh? And then to hear: the power of a Time Lord. And do you notice that the Doctor's theme starts playing when they share the books and Tim gets flashes of the Doctor using the sonic screwdriver?
Tim Steals the Watch: This is when I would gone behind the sofa if I could. Oh no, what's he gonna do? You are not alone. Keep me hidden, the Doctor voice tells Tim through the watch. How where have we heard that phrase before, eh? *grin* But then there was something about an infinite fire and burning, spoken in a woman's voice. I don't understand that.
Living Scarecrows: I don't know about you, but that's as scary as gas-mask zombies! And possession of a boy, a teacher, and a little girl? Oh, that's freaky!
Permission to give Latimer a Beating: *gasp* Smith! Oh, I'm not happy with you anymore. Poor Tim is having flash-forwards to the Great War. He can't help it that he doesn't care for fighting!
Smith: the Hero: Can't do anything simply, now can he? Seeing the stereotypical piano falling on a woman and baby carriage, does he run to warn her? Oh no. He takes a cricket ball and throws it, causing a chain reaction to save them all. So, the Doctor is still in there somewhere. Now, can we just get him back? But, he was so cute doing it. And with that wave of courage, he finally asks Joan to the dance.
John Smith's History: He comes from Gallifrey. But doesn't know where that is. Ah, the TARDIS, keeping in a bit, eh? His father, Sydney, was a watchmaker in Nottingham. *hehe* Perfect occupation for a faux father figure of a Time Lord. And his mother, Verity, was a nurse.
Smith in Love: Ah, poor Joan. You can't have him. Smith doesn't really exist. And he puts her next to the page with the Slitheen, and there's so much power and planning, and it's always for money. And I can't even fault the kiss, since it's not really him. And he looked so cute doing it since it was his first kiss...at least that he can remember. *grin*
Martha's Crush Reappears: I thought we were over this. I really did. I'm sorry, I can't feel bad for you, Martha. He's just not that into you. And when he becomes the Doctor again, he'll still be in love with Rose.
Tim Getting More Instructions: Darkness is coming, says the woman. Keep me away from the force and empty... the Doctor is not being clear enough for me. Speak up, man! last of the Time Lords, another voice says, the last of their wise and ancient race. And then the woman seems to say, look in the faces of man, a villain. Boy, this kid is very bright.
Oh no! Friend of Martha: I'm sorry. You were too close to time travelers. Those that are always have to pay. *sigh*
Can He Dance?: Oh, this makes me miss Rose.
Martha: Companion: Okay, maybe I can forgive you for your crush on the Doctor for just this once due to your quick thinking. And I feel bad for you since Smith is soooo not the Doctor, which is understandably frustrating. However, the Doctor's line: Martha, this is what we call a stor-ee. Oh, you stupid, stupid man. She basically says the same: This, *waving up and down his body*, is not you. Go Martha! I love this frustrating anger.
Bumping into Tim: He has a flash...forward? I don't recall Martha wearing that outfit before.
He Can Dance!: The cute thing is that DT couldn't...*grin*
Martha Trying Anything: Martha is trying to be so kind to Joan. She's going to get hurt. I'm sorry, Joan, there is no way you can keep John Smith. You're nice, and you're lucky. And I just wanted to say sorry for what I'm about to do. Sonic Screwdriver time! You're not John Smith. You're called the Doctor. The man in your journal, he's real. He's you. Yes, and we all want him back!
Now Comes the Pain: We need a Time Lord. Change back! He doesn't know how! Leave him alone!! Ahhh!!! Tim, you need to save the day!!!!
to be continued... Is it Saturday yet?
